Adoption Form

Adoption Criteria and Homing Procedure

East Riding Retired Greyhounds carry out some important checks before accepting your offer to home a greyhound. We will discuss the following criteria:

  • Your working hours (if applicable) to establish how long the greyhound will be left without human company.
  • Garden suitability. Your garden must be secure with a fence and gate of suitable height and adequate locks on all gates.  A fence height of 5-6 feet is ideal.
  • The ages of your children (if applicable) and any previous experience of owning dogs (if any).
  • Your understanding and ability to pay for annual and unexpected veterinary costs.
  • What kind of greyhound you are looking for; playful, energetic type or calm and relaxed for example.
  • Where you live and what type of home you have. This relates to whether you are a tenant or home owner; is there carpeting or laminate flooring, will the greyhound need to do stair climbing.
  • If you are a tenant we will need confirmation in writing from your landlord or letting agent that a greyhound will be welcomed to live in the property with you.
  • We will ask about any other pets you may have.
  • You will need to confirm that you are over 18 years of age.

A homecheck must be satisfactorily completed before a greyhound adoption can proceed. This is to give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and to make sure a greyhound is a suitable pet for you and it provide us with the means to ensure the safety and security of any future greyhound you may adopt.

All our greyhounds are neutered and have had dentals prior to their adoption. While in the care of East Riding Retired Greyhounds, they are vaccinated and routinely treated for parasites.

We request a donation of £150.00 pounds. A leather collar and lead, plastic box muzzle and a house collar are provided with your greyhound. Coats, food and other accessories are available from us at an additional cost. It is recommended that you provide your greyhound with a coat for the winter months as they are susceptible to the cold.

Your Homecheck

Your homecheck is our way of finding out if your home offer is suitable. We will check your garden is secure and discuss all aspects of greyhound care and adoption with you.  The homecheckers will usually bring a greyhound with them and this is your chance to meet a greyhound in your home and talk to a greyhound owner about greyhounds in general in a relaxed and un-hurried manner.

Once the homecheck has been passed as successful you are then in a position to adopt or reserve a suitable greyhound.  In some instances it may be necessary to place you on a waiting list if a specific greyhound type is required and none presently available in kennels i.e. cat friendly, small animal tolerant.

East Riding Retired Greyhounds cannot reserve a greyhound until a successful homecheck has been carried out.

Post-adoption Contact

We welcome updates about our greyhounds and if you would like to keep us updated about your new pets progress we would love to hear about it.  Telephone calls, e-mails, letters and photographs are always valued.

Periodically we may contact you to check on the well-being and progress of your adopted greyhound.  This may be in the form of an e-mail or telephone call.  We may also request your permission to carry out a ‘follow up’ visit.  Our greyhounds’ long-term welfare and happiness is of prime importance to us and as such the greyhounds’ welfare after adoption is as important to us after adoption as the dogs’ well-being whilst he/she is in our care.  If you have any queries or problems arising at any time in your greyhounds’ life with you we ask that you contact us for help or advice.
